Today we are publishing our first Taste of Tempe competition. This started about a year ago while having a heated debate with a friend about who had the best pizza in Tempe. I was a staunch supporter of Venezia's while he (Ryan) insisted Tesio's was the tastiest.
After much discussion neither of us was willing to give up any ground in defending our favorite pizza joints. We decided there was only one way to settle the arguement; have the two restuarants compete with each other.
It went well and Tesios was the victor by a very slim margin. As time passed we talked about trying the competition again and blogging the results but never really got around to it, at least not until today!
Below you will see our latest competition, the current champ Tesio's vs. newcomer Mister G's.
Here are the rules:
1. The same order is placed with both restuarants.
2. Neither is informed about the competition until after the pizza is delivered to prevent any special treatment.
3. Both restaurants are guaged by price, delivey time, employee courtesy, accuracy of order, best specials, and most important; Taste!
4. After the competition both restaurants are informed of the results.
For consistency (and as the rules state) we placed exactly the same order at both restauarnts. In this case it was an extra large cheese pizza with half pepperoni/sausage, and the other half with ham/pineapple. Each order was complemented with a dozen hot wings.
Both pizza places were nearly identical in delivery time with Tesios besting Mister G's by mere seconds at 28 minutes from time of placing the order. Both restuarants were very courteous on the phone and at the time of delivery.
Up to this point they were both on equal footing, but then came cost. Tesios was a good deal pricier at $32.04 compared to Mister. G's total of just $23.93, a definite win for Mr. G's, but not all went well for our newcomer...
The order was messed up pretty badly from Mister G's. The pizza was split into 3 sections of sausage, pepperoni, and ham/pineapple (not what we ordered) and they forgot to include the wings. When the wings were taken out of order the price dropped to $16.94 for just the pie.
Mister G's was willing to correct the order free of charge, which we thought was very nice of them, however the wings would not arrive in time for the taste test. Tesio's order was exactly right.
Overall both pizzas were tastey but we were dissapointed in Tesio's. Having eaten many pizzas and several orders of wings from them we were surprised when this order was not up to par. The wings were particularly bad and only scored a 2 out of a possible 10. If this had been a rematch with Venezias they almost surely would have lost this time around.
Overall Tesios won, but only by a slim margin. If Mister G's had managed to get their order right, and provided us with wings that would have scored a 3 or higher they likely would have taken home the trophy.
Here is what it comes down to, if you want a slightly better pie and don't mind the cost go with Tesio's, but for the student on a budget Mister G's is comparatively a bargain and will quickly deliver a pie that you would likely be satisfied with.
We see a re-match in the future...
Try them out for yourself, and let us know what you think!

Taste of Tempe
We have all had this experience, its late, the cupboards are bare, and your stomach is growling... Glancing the top of the fridge you eye the erraticly stacked collection of delivery coupons. Someone asks, "Do we try something new?" You know its a gamble, but feel adventurous. The order shows up, its hot and tasty, whew... Success is far less common than dissapointment. Its time to mull through the good, bad, and ugly of delivery to find the best our small town has to offer. This is our blog.

Taste of Tempe
About a year ago, after drinking more than a few cold beers with a friend on a lazy Sunday afternoon, we started to get hungry. We soon decided a nice hot pizza with an order of wings would satisfy our cravings, and all was well, at least until the conversation quickly turned into a debate about who had the best pizza in Tempe. Both of us feverently and passionately argued for our personal favorites, but neither of us was willing to concede.
Ryan claimed Tesio's was the best pizza in town while I felt Venezia's clearly had the better pie. There was only one way to settle this, order the same thing from both restaurants and see who had the best food.
We soon realized that the tastiest pie was only one of several aspects that these titans of pizza should be judged on. Quickly we devised a list of catagories to compare the two restuarants. The list included delivery time, accuracy of order, price, how courteous the employees were, who had the best special, and of course taste.
It was a fun exercise, and we decided it would be fun to blog our results, unfortunately the 'official' record from our first competition has since been lost. (The winner was Tesios, but only by a slim margin)
Since we no longer have the score card from this first competition the blog will start with the last battle, Tesio's vs. newcomer Mr G's Pizza.
The rules are simple:
1. The same exact order is placed with both pizza places.
2. Neither restuarant is informed about the competition until after the pizza is delivered to prevent any special treatment.
3. Both restaurants are guaged by price, delivey time, employee courtesy, accuracy of order, best specials, and most important; Taste!
4. After the competition is over we inform both restaurants of the results.
